Sufjan Stevens made me fall in love with America, Illinois to be specific. His poetic descriptions of American life, versus those of Country Singers, rappers, or bro bands, are just right, capturing the uniquely pensive, self-depreciating, yet optimistic soul of United States philosophers.
people listen to him so much at my work it makes me want to puke...that said, some of his songs (specifically john wayne gacy) are incredibly poetic and well-thoughtout
He's won just about every independent music award, and is at the top of list for 2 years running for his Michigan and Illinois albums, and I still think he's underrated.

Jason Mraz - His songs are unoriginal

Eric Clapton - Page does circles around Clapton...creatively, stylistically, and even on the fundamental blues level. Listen to "Since I've Been Lovin' You"…

    The Doors - Highly overrated

Hall & Oates - Look past the glam. Their music is a lot deeper than many people think, especially the album cuts. Well, Daryl…

The Doors - Very original band, with the baritone voice, amazing music. RIGHT NOW they are very underrated.
